Full Day Workshop

Employees (and employers!) may be stressed but now know it. How do you spot the signs of stress so that you can make an early intervention? This extensive workshop examines why Health & Safety is important, particularly in the context of Stress and Bullying in the workplace and highlights the role of the Disciplinary and Grievance Procedures? This workshop also looks at how to prepare for a visit from the Health and Safety Authority and how to set up a Safety Management System in the Workplace. We will look at; the Safety Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and the General Workplace Regulations 2007; Health and Safety Authority Code of Practice on Workplace Bullying; as well as the Employment Equality Acts 1998-2004, using a number of case studies on Workplace Stress and Bullying.

What will I get out of this Workshop?

As a result of attending this event you will:

·        Be aware of the types of Stress and Bullying related cases that have emerged in the Health & Safety Context;

·        Appreciate the relevance of Health & Safety Legislation and Codes of Practice in addressing Stress and Bullying Cases.

·        Appreciate the steps necessary to ensure that you are fully compliant from a legal perspective under the relevant Health & Safety Legislation;

·        Understand the role of both the Disciplinary and in particular the Grievance Procedure in handling Stress and Bullying related cases in the Workplace.

·        Be more aware of the signs and symptoms of stress, including behavioural, psychological and physiological changes,

·        Appreciate the necessity of an early intervention

·        Be able to devise an appropriate helping strategy 

·       Understand the importance of review and monitoring protocols

·       Be able to link the legislative requirements of the relevant legislation to the appropriate manner in which to address Workplace Stress and Harassment;

·        Be able to apply the Health and Safety Authority Code of Practice to your own internal Workplace Policies and Procedures

Session 2: Practical Application of Health & Safety   

Preparing for a Visit from the Health and Safety Authority and setting up a Safety Management System in the Workplace. The Role of the Disciplinary and Grievance Procedures in Health and Safety in the Workplace

·        Appreciate the steps necessary to ensure that you are fully compliant from a legal perspective under the relevant Health & Safety Legislation;

Facilitators

Dr Kieran Doran – Senior Healthcare Ethics Lecturer, University College Cork

Kieran is a qualified as a Solicitor and trained with Beauchamps Solicitors in Dublin. Whilst Kieran practiced widely in the Medical Law area, he also undertook work in Personal Injury, Public and Employer Liability cases, as well as general Insurance Law work. Kieran also expanded his work experience into the areas of both Employment Law and Health & Safety Law whilst working for O’Donnell Sweeney Solicitors who he joined once he qualified as a Solicitor. Kieran has also written and lectured extensively in all of these areas of law.

Kieran took up his current position in UCC in November 2006 and is an Associate Lecturer in Healthcare Risk Management in Dublin Institute of Technology, as well as lecturing in Medical Ethics & Law in the Royal College of Surgeons, and tutoring in the University of Limerick Graduate Entry to Medicine Programme. Kieran also tutors at the Law Society in Cork and Dublin in Employment Law, whilst also lecturing in Employment Law and Health and Safety Law at the National College of Ireland, as well as being a Lecturer in Employment Law at Griffith College Cork.

He also acts in a Consultative Role with the Irish College of General Practitioners, the Irish Dental Association, and the Irish Nursing Homes Organisation.           

Kevin Farrell

Kevin is an accredited psychotherapist and clinical supervisor. He works with a team of EAP providers in a large public service organisation. He has a BSc in Psychology and postgraduate diplomas in Employee Assistance Programmes (EAP), Bereavement Studies, Social Studies and Theology. He has a special interest in bereavement and loss and is working towards his MSc in Bereavement Studies with the Irish Hospice Foundation & Royal College of Surgeons.
