Our staff travel (in their own cars) on company business and are given an allowance for petrol. We want to issue a policy regarding their responsibilities around driving whilst on company business e.g. use of mobile telephone, speeding, drinking etc and would welcome advice on the type of things to include or to say. It is perfectly reasonable for employers to remind employees of their responsibilities around driving while on company business. Typically, any such policy would include the following:
* Employees are required to obey the law and rules of the road while driving on company business – this would include obeying speed limits, refraining from unsafe driving practices and refraining from driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
* The company is not liable for any breach of the law.
* Employees are responsible for their own vehicle and its safety and maintenance. The vehicle must be in a road worthy condition and comply with any legislation in this regard.
