If a company does not pay sick pay can they still insist on medical certs?

Yes. There is no statutory requirement to pay sick pay, but this does not prevent employers requiring a medical certificate. The requirement to provide medical certificates would usually be included in the employee’s Contract of Employment, the Employee Handbook or the Company’s sick leave policy.
