The government announced on Tuesday, 31 August 2021, that a gradual return to workplaces for specific business requirements can take place from 20 September 2021 onwards, under the new roadmap for re-opening society, 'COVID-19: Reframing the Challenge, Continuing Our Recovery and Reconnecting'.

It is expected that a new version of the Work Safely Protocol will be published in the coming weeks in advance of that date, the latest version was published on 14 May 2021. Many employers will be required to plan for the phased return to workplaces in advance of this date, without an updated Work Safely Protocol available to assist in their efforts to create a safe, productive work environment for
