The Organisation of Working Time Act 1997 (“OWTA”) regulates a variety of employment conditions including maximum working hours, night work and annual and public holiday leave. This piece looks at three discrete areas regulated by the OWTA which are frequently queried by clients.
2. Public Holidays falling on Weekend Days
Where a Public Holiday falls on a weekend day, the subsequent working weekday (usually a Monday) is a ‘normal’ working day under Irish employment law. There is no automatic entitlement to the following working weekday day off work.
This will soon be relevant, given that both Christmas Day 2011 and New Year’s Day 2012 fall on Sundays.
