Why is neurodiversity awareness training important?
Neurodiversity refers to the natural variations in how human brains function and process information. Although the term neurodiversity technically includes both neurodivergent and neurotypical thinkers, it is commonly associated with certain conditions or neuro differences such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and others. These differences can sometimes be seen as ‘weaknesses’, but they also come with hidden strengths!
- Autism can be a lack of eye contact
- But it can also be noticing patterns nobody else has seen
- ADHD can be chaotic
- But it can also be hyperfocus and getting twice as much done as everybody else
- Dyslexia can be spelling mistakes
- But it can also be concepts, ideas, and a viewpoint you hadn’t previously considered
Who needs neurodiversity awareness training?
According to a recent survey conducted by Red C on behalf of Bank of Ireland, almost 1 in 10 adults in Ireland identify as neurodivergent, yet only half of neurodivergent individuals who are working have disclosed their condition to their employer.
Each interaction at work involves people with diverse cognitive and behavioural traits, yet many organisations overlook the importance of neurodiversity and neuroinclusion.
By embracing neurodiversity and providing the correct support, organisations can unlock the untapped potential of a diverse workforce, driving positive outcomes and enriching their culture.
“The value of neurodiversity awareness training across an organisation should not be underestimated as it can help develop a general awareness, understanding and appreciation of colleagues.
“Through suitable training, employees can become comfortable talking about neurodiversity. Establishing a basic etiquette will help put neurodivergent employees at ease, while also allowing management and colleagues to approach issues without fear of getting it wrong.”
