About this course
With the value of diversity and inclusion as important as ever, it is vital that employees have an understanding of how unconscious bias, often referred to as implicit bias, can impact on their workplace and the organisation. We all have biases, many of them unconscious. Dealing with these biases starts with making the unconscious conscious.
Legal Island’s Unconscious Bias in the Workplace eLearning course provides comprehensive training for all Irish-based employees, ensuring awareness of good practice in reducing unconscious bias in the workplace.
This course has been recently updated and includes new lessons on the impact of proximity bias and remote working, artificial intelligence and bias, and real life examples of organisations that have encountered unconscious bias issues in the workplace.
To enhance our ability to provide cutting-edge learning solutions, we have integrated AI tools for eLearning into this course.
What is unconscious bias?
Unconscious bias refers to the subtle, often unintentional stereotypes and prejudices that can influence our decisions and actions without our conscious awareness. These biases can shape our perceptions of factors such as gender, race, age, and more, ultimately impacting the way we interact in the workplace. This can really affect workplaces and organisations and can be a huge problem when trying to be fully diverse.
Why is unconscious bias training important?
Unconscious bias at work can influence decisions in recruitment, promotion, staff development, and recognition and can lead to a less diverse workforce. Cases of unconscious bias happen every single day in Irish workplaces. Where unconscious bias is against a protected social characteristic, it can be discriminatory in law. Recognising and addressing unconscious bias, often referred to as implicit bias, is a fundamental step towards creating a fair and equitable work environment.
Organisations have much to gain from promoting a higher awareness of unconscious bias amongst their staff. The benefits of reducing unconscious bias in the workplace include:
- Better decision making
- Reduced recruitment costs
- Increased staff engagement
- More productive teams
- Increased diversity in the workplace
Who needs unconscious bias training?
Advice from diversity and inclusion experts is that unconscious bias training is completed on day one of employment and then refreshed regularly to ensure all staff are aware of the impact of unconscious bias in the workplace and understand the different types of unconscious bias that exist.
The standard misconception is that unconscious bias awareness training is only required for those working in recruitment and selection. This is not the case, the benefit of making all staff aware of what biases they might have can be a great tool to use to prevent a claim of discrimination or harassment in an organisation.
How long does this Unconscious Bias training take?
The course will take no longer than 60 minutes to complete including an assessment. Each member of staff will receive their own personalised certificate upon successful completion.
